While in college, Clayton Tucker studied abroad at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. In 2019, Fudan drew international attention after revising its charter to emphasize loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. NPR reported that the university "deleted principles like freedom of thought" as part of the changes.
